HYROX: how to prepare for your first race

Build your HYROX preparation around running, station practice and race-day decisions, with a checklist for choosing your next step.

Preparing for HYROX starts with understanding the event you have entered and the athlete you are today. Your running background, confidence with loaded movements and available training time all affect what a useful preparation period looks like. Begin with those facts before choosing a target finish time.

Make a personal starting-point checklist

Write down your recent exercise routine, the running you can currently repeat comfortably and the station movements you have already practised. Add your realistic training days and the equipment you can access. These notes give a coach—or your own planning process—something more useful than an ambitious calendar copied from another athlete.

  • Which activities are already part of your normal week?
  • Which stations need instruction or equipment access?
  • Where will recovery fit around work and other commitments?
  • What does your selected race division require?

Separate learning from testing

A station session can be valuable without becoming a race simulation. Learn the setup, movement and judging requirements at an effort where you can concentrate. A qualified coach can help with technique you cannot easily assess yourself. Once the basics feel familiar, use suitable combination sessions to explore the transition back to running.

Practise decisions as well as movements

Use training to notice what happens when you begin a station too quickly or take an unplanned break. Record the effect on the next part of the session. Choose one adjustment to revisit rather than changing everything at once. This gives each practice a clear question to answer.

Prepare the practical details

Before race week, read your event’s athlete information and check travel, arrival and registration arrangements. Set aside familiar clothing and shoes. Keep the current briefing accessible; venue procedures can differ, and the organiser’s instructions take precedence over general advice.

Define a process goal alongside any time goal: following your intended opening effort, keeping track of the course or applying a station cue. Afterwards, review what happened without treating one finish as a complete verdict on your fitness.
