Workout planning: choose the right session for today
Give your workout a clear purpose, choose an appropriate starting level and make a simple plan you can adjust to the day you have.

A workout becomes easier to choose when you know what it is for. You might want to practise a movement, complete comfortable aerobic work or rehearse a run-and-station combination. Begin with that purpose rather than trying to fit every goal into one session.
Ask three questions before you start
- What is today’s main task? Pick one priority you can recognise afterwards.
- What time and equipment do I have? Include warming up, setup and finishing, not just the main work.
- What is appropriate today? Consider your recent training, experience and how you feel.
For example, a short gym visit might be enough for focused carry practice with suitable instruction. It may not be the right opportunity for a complicated circuit that requires several busy pieces of equipment.
Build a simple session outline
Write down an easy introduction, the main work and a calm finish. Make the exercise choices and recovery clear before you begin. If the purpose is learning, allow time to pause and review a cue. If the purpose is an easy run, avoid adding an unplanned hard finish just because the session feels comfortable.
Keep an easier option ready
Decide in advance what you can reduce: fewer rounds, a shorter duration, a lighter manageable load or more recovery. If you feel unwell or develop pain, stop and seek appropriate advice rather than treating the easier option as permission to continue through symptoms.
Review the session without overcomplicating it
Afterwards, record what you did and one useful observation. Did you use the intended effort? Did setup take longer than expected? Was the session realistic in the time available? Those details can improve your next choice without requiring a detailed performance dashboard.
A single workout sits inside a wider routine. Consider the week as a whole before deciding that you need another demanding session. For general activity options, the NHS exercise hub provides a starting point. GRITROX’s Training page offers examples, and Build your week helps organise the choices you make.
